With Reformers Like This, Who Needs Tyrants?
In the ‘Newspeak’ of international politics today, it seems the word ‘reformer’ has taken on a different meaning. In the last forty years, Libyans and Syrians never saw anything from their governments that even rhymes with ‘reform.’ Today, Ghadafi orders his armed thugs to shoot down civilians by the hundreds, proclaiming that the rebels “will be hunted house to house like rats.” For this he justifiably gets called a “murderous tyrant.” In Syria, Assad orders his similarly armed goons in to do the same, but carefully avoids the language of bloody threats and vengeance. Everyone from Hilary Clinton to Recep Tayyip Erdogan calls him a ‘reformer.’ All of which begs the question – Do political leaders get issued different dictionaries than the rest of us? I suspect that being a ‘reformer’ nowadays depends on style rather than, heaven forbid, actually enacting any reforms. The sly cats of Damascus say little, beyond an occasional purring denial, as they too hunt down and kill their own citizens, and the world looks away. Of course, there is more to it than that. Ghaddafi managed, during the past forty years, to isolate himself and alienate much of the international community. His fellow Arab Leaguers loathe him, while Western leaders were only recently learning to humor him again. Beyond the oil industry, outside economic interests in Libya remained relatively minor, just as Libyan investments outside Organization of African Unity countries trickled down to negligible levels. So if a friendless Ghaddafi stops paying his African mercenaries, they too will no doubt turn their guns on his regime.
