No chance for rain in forecast
No chance for rain is in the forecast for Abilene this week, according to the National Weather Service in San Angelo.
"Through the end of May, it's going to look dry," said Kimberly Hoeppner, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Angelo.
Hoeppner said the La Niña weather pattern over the winter has kept areas drier.
"Some months, there has been no rain recorded at all in certain locations," she said.
"So we don't have the green vegetation across the region to keep us cooler because of the lack of moisture at the surface."
Today through Sunday, expect the high daytime temperatures to be in the mid- to upper 90s with overnight lows ranging from the high 50s to the low 70s, she said.
Hoeppner said the surface temperature is just one element that can make the days warmer, but it's a combination of weather patterns — including an upper-level ridge system — that causes no rain or very little rain.
"We typically don't break 100 degrees as early as we did this year," she said.
On May 8, the high in Abilene was 102.
For the three-month outlook, Hoeppner said, "We will continue to see warmer-than-normal conditions and we could see near normal conditions for precipitation."
The La Niña pattern ended in April, she said.
