Tasmania, Australia: Wild life and art on the 'afterthought' island Four hundred miles south of the Australian mainland, Tasmania used to be a conservative place, the haunt of backpackers and families relishing remoteness. Now, Peter Hughes discovers, it is a hip destination with art and architecture as wild as its landscapes.No one goes to Tasmania on their first visit to Australia . Ever. Even the Dutch 400 years ago missed it to begin with, and they were mapping everything in the Antipodes that didn't move. It was 36 years after Willem Janszoon bumped into Queensland that his fellow Dutchman, Abel Tasman, stumbled on the island that was to take his name.
The same went for Captain Cook in the next century. He didn't make it to Tasmania until 1777, seven years after he first set foot in Australia at Botany Bay. And so it went on. The island wasn't settled until 1803, 15 years after the first convicts had been landed on the mainland. Tasmania has always been a bit of an afterthought.
Tassie was temperate in every sense of the word, in meteorology and moderation. Its scenery was like Scotland with road kill: wild, beautiful, mountainous and remote, but with its highways paved with flattened fauna. Exotic fauna, admittedly, but flattened for all that. Amid the crafts stalls and honey-sellers in Hobart's Salamanca Market, you can buy a spoof cookbook called Roadkill Recipes . Its dishes include Skippy the Bush Vindaloo, Possum Pizza and Tasmanian Kidney Deville.
Tassie was always conservative – small c. A bit like Wales on this side of the world, it defined the traditional holiday: it was for families, especially those with walking boots and backpacks, and they stayed in guesthouses, caravans and beach shacks, or they camped. Whatever else it was, Tasmania was predictable. Not any more.
Tassie has discovered an extravagant alter ego. It has gone from bumpkin to wild child in the blink of a wombat. And the most obstreperous example of that transformation opened this winter on the outskirts of Hobart. Of all places, Hobart. Quite the most demure of all Australia's state capitals, it's as much village as city. It has gardens with hedges, and cottages, rather than houses, which seldom extend beyond one storey. The high rises, which are never very high, look as gauche as Gulliver in Lilliput. You feel there must be more of it underground. Now there is, in the suburb of Berriedale.
