1. Free Technology Breakfast at the Daresbury Centre on 30 June
This will cover two common industrial applications: coating and drilling.
Laser coating uses less energy, has greater material usage than other coating methods and has no industrial effluent to dispose of. It can also lead to new product developments as the coating can be directed if needs be, rather than a blanket approach. In a recent visit to Germany, the University’s director of the Laser Research Processing Centre was told that coating applications form 80% of the laser related queries made to the Fraunhofer Institutes: showing that German manufacturers are making big investments in this area. British companies will need to consider this technology to stay competitive. Laser Drilling is a contactless process, can be extraordinary fast on metals less than 5mm thick and produce holes with little stress and no break out. As it is tool-less a laser system can recoup its costs by not needing to replace or repair drill bits. A laser system has increased versatility, it can handle different and thicknesses and can produce micro-holes, too small to be produced by anything but the most expensive tools. The micro holes can even be drilled in angles or on curved surfaces. Laser drilling is not just limited to metals: it can be used on composites, plastics, concrete or wood with appropriate advantages in tool wear, stress and hole parameters.The technology breakfast will open at 8 am, with presentations beginning at 8:30. These will finish by 10:30. Delegates will also be informed about the Knowledge Exchange in Laser Engineering Programme which offers a free service to eligible companies (ie independent SMEs) in the North West on evaluating lasers for their business.
