New Mineral Carries UH Scientist's Name
It's not everyday a new mineral is discovered — and named for you.
But Alexander N. "Sasha" Krot, a researcher with the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, has made such significant contributions to understanding the mineralogy and geology of the early solar system that his colleagues in New York decided to name a newfound mineral after him.
The new mineral, krotite, was discovered in a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite and is one of the earliest minerals formed in the solar system. Its discovery was announced in the May-June issue of the American Mineralogist scientific journal.
