Nigeria: The Fresh Clamour for a National Carrier
The aviation industry is a very dynamic one in which situations evolve and change so fast. Recent developments have, more than ever before, made Nigerians to agitate for the establishment of a national carrier so as to undertake national assignments with ease as well as mitigate the tension of international travels experienced by Nigerians who patronise foreign airlines.
In 2008, 136 Nigerians were kicked off a British Airways flight from London to Lagos because they complained about the inhuman treatment of a fellow Nigerian who was being deported from London.
One concerned Nigerian, Ayodeji Omotade felt strongly about the incident and spoke up. The BA crew felt slighted by the Nigerians audacity, threw Citizen Omotade, who was merely being his brother's keeper, off the aircraft and banned him from using their services.
This would not be happening, he might have felt, if Nigeria had a national carrier of her own. Clearly, if Nigeria had a national carrier, Citizen Omotade reasoned further, most of the airlines that treat her citizens like dirt, knowing that they had no choice, would be compelled to compete for the business of her citizens. They would therefore be forced to treat Nigerian citizens with dignity. The above is enough reason for the government, Citizen Omotade might have reasoned, to expedite action on establishing a flag carrier that her citizens would be proud of.
Citizen Omotade's sentiments are shared by the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE).The two organisations are closing ranks as they perfect plans to begin the agitation for the establishment of a national carrier.
The national presidents of ATSSSAN and NUATE, Benjamin Okewu and Safiyanu Mohammed said in an interview that the vacuum created in the aviation industry by the absence of a functional government-owned carrier has remained a major problem for the country.
