One of her favourite pursuits is searching through what most would call 'junk' for such miscellaneous objects as copper wires, brass shavings, springs, electrical connectors and even watch parts.
These scraps are then creatively embedded into the potter's one-of-a-kind creations featuring colourful flowers, leaves and other nature-inspired designs. It may seem like an odd combination - garbage and flowers - but the mixture represents the world we live in and is a stunning and funky theme throughout her work.
"We're not a Garden of Eden anymore," she says. "We've got a lot of industry to deal with. One of my motivations for making artwork is to reflect a new view of our landscape and to show that tension between what we create and what nature is."
Wendy is one of nine artists who will participate in this weekend's 13th annual Fundy Studio Tour, a self-guided tour of fine art and craft studios beginning in Hillsborough along the picturesque Route 114 and finishing in Alma.
During the event, roughly 300 people will wander through Wendy's shop, which features not only her own works, but those of 35 other Maritime artists.
This weekend she will also celebrate the grand opening of her new Art Effects Fine Craft Gallery, a two-level, 400 square foot expansion that will allow her to better represent the works of the many new artists she has taken on.
"I'm one of just four fine craft shops in New Brunswick that represent entirely Maritime artists and artisans," she says. "I have really unique, funky things that you can't find at the mall. My whole purpose in life is to provide an alternative to conventional manufacturing and designing that you see everywhere."
For those who'd like a behind-the-scenes look at how she creates her unique and contemporary designs, she will be demonstrating the 'throwing' technique, a precise method for placing clay on the pottery wheel.
