Five errors doom AJ in loss to Harrisburg

ANNA - Five errors that led to five runs wasted an 11-hit day at the plate by Anna-Jonesboro as the Wildcats dropped an 8-5 game to the Harrisburg Bulldogs in prep baseball action.

"We stayed ahead of a really good team," said Harrisburg coach Jay Thompson. "They really swung the bats today, but our kids played good defense and that was the difference in the game."

The Southern Illinois River to River Ohio Division leader Harrisburg (22-4) won its third game in a row and 13 of its last 14 by tak-ing advantage of Anna-Jonesboro's gifts.

"This is what's driving Coach Alley crazy," said Anna-Jonesboro coach Jake Alley. "We pride ourselves on pitching, defense and scoring some runs and the defense has to get better starting tomorrow."

Anna-Jonesboro (15-7-1), who is second in the Mississippi Division, saw its three game winning streak snapped and also wasted a strong pitching performance from freshman right-hander Tyler Vaughn.

"Tyler Vaughn is competitor," Alley said. "We have three conference games this week and I asked the guys who was pitching against Harrisburg and Tyler was the first to raise his hand. He wanted it and he did his job today."

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff single by Keelin Rasch followed by a run-scoring double by Isaac Behme and a one-out ground out to short by Nick Borders.

The Wildcats shook off their bad start and hit Harrisburg starting pitcher Ryne Roper hard in their half of the first. Dalton Baker led off with the first of his three singles and was followed by Brent Taylor with a bloop single to center.

One out later, Baker scored on a ground out by Brady Wright. Vaughn drove in Taylor on a bouncer up the middle and scored on a triple by Chad Mayes to take the lead 3-2.

A leadoff double by Cody Hall and a fielding error in the third inning started the downfall. After a strikeout, Vaughn then hit Roper to load the bases.

Vaughn (2-1-1) almost got out of the jam by striking out Borders and forcing Logan Leverett to hit a ground ball to third, but Go-forth dropped Wright's throw to allow two runs to score.
